Jute fiber is older than written history. The first examples of it date back to the Neolithic era. Thousands of years later, Jute was used as the material of choice for rope on clipper ships before the invention of steel cables. The jute plant becomes soft when retted in water. After it is retted it is stripped and tied into bundles and then twisted into yarn, braided and finally sewn into rugs, table accents and baskets.
